Sales Tax Summary for Travelers to Texas

Texas State Sales Tax (meals, etc.): 6.25%

Texas State Occupancy Tax (lodging): 6%

In addition, a city and/or county can impose sales and/or lodging tax ranging from ½% - 2%.

 

Texas Exemption Procedures

Once out of state tax exemption status is approved, the State of Texas will issue a
tax exempt letter assigning a unique 11-digit Texas-specific tax ID number.

Upon presentation of the Texas tax exempt acceptance letter, the 6.25% sales tax
and the city and/or county tax will be waived for business travel.

You are not exempt from state and/or local hotel occupancy taxes.

Purchases must be paid for with a check or credit card in the name of the exempt organization.

Hotel Instructions
  1. Network Hotels: Participating 501(c)(3) institutions will be pre-enrolled at all CTM Network
    hotels for purposes of sales tax waiver. Should traveler lose or forget tax exempt documentation,
    CTM back-up copies will be available.

  2. Out-of-Network Hotels: Participating 501(c)(3) institutions will not be enrolled at Out-of Network hotels.
    Should traveler lose or forget tax exempt documentation, CTM cannot guarantee waiver of sales tax.
